France’s Ponchet, seeded 3, struggled to overcome Taiwan’s Liang and needed three sets to get through the round (6-2, 6-7, 6-3). In her match against the battling Bantecchi, the Swiss had to retire in the fifth game, when the Spaniard was leading 3-2, due to a painful plantar fasciitis. The road to the semifinal was easier, although Guerrero was concerned about her opponent’s physical problems.
